What is a Decision Table?

I made this decision table in Word. Notice the “Y”-yes and “N”-no, patterns that are placed first. Then the appropriate “X” for the outcome. I created this for a project in my Advanced IT course for my masters in Information Technology.

A decision table is a highly organized, structured, and systematic method used in decision analysis and logic modeling to clearly represent all conceivable combinations of conditions, inputs, or criteria that might influence a particular outcome. It serves as a comprehensive visual tool that maps out these various conditions alongside the corresponding actions or decisions that should be taken in response to each unique scenario. By laying out this information in a tabular format, decision tables not only simplify complex decision-making processes but also enhance clarity, consistency, and completeness in evaluating potential outcomes. This method ensures that every possible situation is thoroughly considered, reducing the risk of overlooking critical conditions or responses. As a result, decision tables are particularly valuable in fields such as software engineering, business rule modeling, and systems analysis, where logical accuracy and exhaustive planning are essential.
