S.E.O Explained Easy!

S.E.O is about WORDS guessing assuming or knowing the keywords that a user will type in or say into their phone to find your business. SEO stands for search engine optimization. What is a search engine you ask?

“A search engine is a web-based tool that enables users to locate information on the World Wide Web. Popular examples of search engines are Google, Yahoo!, and MSN Search. Search engines utilize automated software applications (referred to as robots, bots, or spiders) that travel along the Web, following links from page to page, site to site. The information gathered by the spiders is used to create a searchable index of the Web.” (DesignHammer LLC, What is a search engine?) You can kind of think of it as the browser but there is a difference-A browser is a piece of software that retrieves and displays web pages; a search engine is a website that helps people find web pages from other websites.

There are a few essential parameters that should be considered when doing a great SEO (Search Engine Optimization) job. First if your client doesn’t have a domain yet this is great! You can now configure the words in their domain to get them prime visits. Let me explain by example. Say you own a bike shop in New Brighton, PA. and you see that the domain; bikeshopinnewbrightonpa.com is available. Well, what site do you think will be first in a Google search if a user types in “bikes in New Brighton PA” or speaks it into their phone. Your client’s website! Thus, having a domain with searchable words is awesome.

The next is the title tab. These are the words you see when you hover over the tap at top when on a website. This is the first wording the spiders read. <title> Bikes in New Brighton pa</title> It does not have to be the same name as the homepage in the menu bar. People usually leave that as “Home.”

The next is sitemaps for the spiders to understand your site along with internal linking structure.

Go to- https://search.google.com/search-console/about– click “start now.” You should see this page.

search console

Sign into your Google account. Once done. Refresh the previous page and click”Search property” and “Add property.”

Go to this page- https://console.cloud.google.com/apis/dashboard?project=celestial-now-328105,  then navigate to “Domain Verification” on the left. https://console.developers.google.com/

Also test your site for “rich results.” https://search.google.com/test/rich-results

Before your content can rank, it needs links. Google finds your posts and pages best when they’re linked to from somewhere on the web. Internal links also connect your content and give Google an idea of the structure of your website. They can establish a hierarchy on your site, allowing you to provide the most important pages and posts more link value than other, less valuable pages. So, using the right internal linking strategy can boost your SEO! Internal linking structure can be easily done. Just hyperlink a word or phrase in a blog post that relates to another page on your website and link those word or words to that page. For example, say you have a cooking website and in one of your blog posts is a cookie recipe. Now, on the homepage you mention the word “cookie” somewhere. Just hyperlink that word to that blog post.

The next and a very important SEO strategy is blogging, and I wrote an article about it- https://www.darrensites.pro/why-blogging-is-important/

Tip: If you made videos that can capture the transcript of what you spoke, say on YouTube, then you have words to start with.

Now the more complex issue is key words and key phrases. I have come across many avenues on keyword research and buying keywords (which I don’t understand). So, I keep this aspect of SEO simple and think of the “user.” I do this because Google keeps the user first! What would the user type or say to find my product or services? Thus, I use those to set as my key words. Writing naturally for humans but inserting them for the spiders. Especially that title tag or good domain name.

The next tool is Google Mybusiness – https://youtu.be/81nhmYRTYZM . Some have argued that doing this has replaced some SEO tools. Sure it gets you on Google but to rank more I have done all these tools. And there is that key word thing for the user.

Secret Tip: Put your key phrases in quotes where it looks appropriate. Let me explain. When a teacher reviews a paper for plagiarism, they may put a few sentences of a student’s paper in quotes and put it in a search, to see if it was referenced on the Internet. If they didn’t put those sentences in quotes, in the search result paragraphs, all the bolded words would be spread throughout the search paragraphs. To explain this, more if you put “taxi in butler pa” in quotes and put it in the search bar, the first Google listing will be my client-Going my way. I put that phrase in quotes on his website. His phone is ringing off the hook! So, in other words, (no bun intended) knowing the primary term a searcher will use and using this technique should get you the same results.

With all this being said, just write quality and interesting content. It is ok to toot about what great things you have done or your awesome products, but instead you should bring important and sought-after value to the Internet. Plus write “How-to’s” or explain something, like in this post. Do how-to’s in your YouTube channel. Writing often, including social media and answering questions in Quora.com is a great strategy as well.

Other tips would be; site loading speed- https://tools.pingdom.com/,

image size reduction, and responsiveness(mobile view) https://search.google.com/test/mobile-friendly.

We could go into canonical URL’s https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/10347851?hl=en and duplicate content but I am sleepy and will save that for another post.

Downtime as a Graphic Designer

darrensites, web design

What I do as a graphic designer is practice my skills in Illustrator and Photoshop by making creating logo primitives. Trending applications of logos are not to be literal as in Starbucks not using a bean for their logo or Nike not using a shoe.

Not to knock a literal logo, because recently I made a logo for a client. It was for his clothing company-Island Cowboy- and you guessed it, I made an image of a cowboy on a horse and put it on a island, he loved it!

Today we make logos that are more abstract and may have a hidden message if you stare at it long enough and think of the association to the company. A logo is only part of the branding process, but it should convey the tone, image, voice and culture of the company. Whether clear or subtle a great logo can accomplish all these things. Below are some of my practice logos at-Crown Graphix- during downtime.

Why Blogging is Important.

Why Blogging is Important.

You probably heard the sentence “Content is king.” What this refers to is words. It will always be king- your word content- because that is what people use to search the Internet.

With that in mind, what does this have to do with blogging? We don’t know the true data metrics that search engines like Google uses, but there are educated guesses. A fast website, mobile responsive, and a secure website plus many other factors. Another factor is not having a static website. Google hates static websites. Sites that are frozen with infrequent or no changes in the word content.

Websites are frequently crawled by what the industry calls “Google spiders.” They crawl or read websites to understand the relevance of the webpage. They index websites with the keywords or key phrases they find and position that website in their SERP or search engine result page.

Thus, when you blog on your website you give the spiders new content to index. Plus, a better positioned website in the SERP.

Now writing content can be a challenge. Just write freely about your business or recent updates keeping your key words and phrases in mind. Don’t be afraid to use industry words. They will index you as a professional in your industry. Inserting links to pages on your site that include those words helps too. If you are using images, please supply an ALT text, noting your company or industry and describing the picture.

Once you start on the road to blogging it will get easier. I have one business and the blogging site gets way more traffic than its static component.

If you write steady you will get followers to you blog. That increases visits to your site and possibly new customers! So, start adding words with your blog today.
